NiMet Forecasts Dust Haze and Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted a stretch of dust haze and cloudy conditions from Monday to Wednesday across the country, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet said slight dust haze will dominate the northern region on Monday throughout the forecast period. However, parts of Borno State and Yobe State are expected to experience moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility ranging from 2km to 5km.

For the North Central region, slight dust haze is anticipated throughout Monday. In the southern region, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected, alongside slim chances of morning thunderstorms over parts of Cross River State and Akwa Ibom State. Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rains are forecast over areas including Ondo State, Ogun State, Lagos State, Edo State, Bayelsa State, Rivers State and Delta State.

On Tuesday, moderate dust haze with visibility between 2km and 5km is predicted across the northern region, while slight dust haze will persist in the North Central states. The southern region will continue to see cloudy conditions with chances of morning thunderstorms in Akwa Ibom and Cross River, followed by light rains in several coastal and inland states later in the day.

By Wednesday, NiMet projects thick dust haze across both the northern and North Central regions. The southern region is expected to remain cloudy with intervals of sunshine and possible morning thunderstorms in Cross River and Akwa Ibom, with light rains forecast in Bayelsa, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Rivers and Delta.

The agency advised residents, especially those with asthma and other respiratory conditions, to exercise caution due to suspended dust particles. Motorists are urged to drive carefully during rainfall, while airline operators are encouraged to obtain airport specific weather reports for effective planning.
