UN Women Reports Devastating Impact on Ukrainian Women Amid Energy Crisis and Job Losses

UN Women has warned of the deepening social and economic toll on Ukrainian women as prolonged conflict, energy disruptions, and widespread job losses continue to reshape daily life across the country. In a newly released assessment, the agency detailed how the cumulative effects of infrastructure damage and economic contraction are disproportionately affecting women and girls.

The report highlights that repeated strikes on energy facilities have led to prolonged power outages, disrupting essential services and limiting access to heating, healthcare, and education. Women, who often shoulder primary caregiving responsibilities, are facing increased domestic burdens as households adapt to unstable utilities. In rural and conflict affected regions, access to reliable electricity has become a critical concern during colder months.

Economic instability has further intensified hardship. Sectors employing large numbers of women, including retail, education, and social services, have experienced significant contraction. Many women have either lost employment or shifted into informal work arrangements with limited protections. UN Women noted that female headed households are particularly vulnerable to poverty due to reduced income opportunities.

The agency also raised concerns about heightened risks of gender based violence and exploitation amid displacement and economic strain. Support services have expanded in several regions, but access remains uneven, especially near frontline areas. Humanitarian partners are working to strengthen protection networks and provide psychosocial assistance.

UN Women called for sustained international funding to support targeted programs aimed at economic recovery and social protection. Initiatives include vocational training, small business grants, and expanded childcare services to enable workforce participation. The agency emphasized that inclusive recovery planning is essential to prevent long term gender disparities.
