Edo State has officially declared a Lassa Fever outbreak following the confirmation of 28 cases and six deaths, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, announced Friday in Benin City. The recent surge in infections, particularly from Etsako West and Esan West Local Government Areas, indicates sustained community transmission that requires urgent and coordinated intervention.

Oshiomhole stated that the Ministry of Health conducted a thorough epidemiological review and risk assessment before declaring the outbreak. He reassured the public that the state had anticipated seasonal Lassa Fever occurrences and had proactively supplied Lassa treatment packs to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital to support containment and treatment efforts.
