Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to reconsider the dates announced for the 2027 general elections, citing concerns that the timetable coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

INEC had earlier fixed February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, while governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027. The dates were announced in Abuja by the commission’s chairman, Joash Amupitan.

Reacting in a post on X, Ahmad respectfully appealed to the electoral body to review the schedule, noting that both dates fall within Ramadan, a period when many Muslims dedicate themselves to fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection.

He warned that conducting elections during the fasting period could pose participation challenges for a significant segment of the population. According to him, many Muslims reduce engagement in physically demanding activities to focus on religious obligations, which may affect voter turnout.

Ahmad stressed that if the objective is to promote inclusive and broad participation in the electoral process, it would be worthwhile for the commission to reconsider the timing. He argued that given Nigeria’s sizeable Muslim population, adjusting the dates could enhance convenience and ensure that more citizens are able to fully exercise their civic rights.

He added that his comments were made in the spirit of inclusiveness and national cohesion, urging the commission to take into account the country’s religious diversity when planning major national exercises.

INEC has yet to respond publicly to the appeal.
