IKEJA — Tragedy struck on Monday as a cyclist lost his life in a road traffic accident beneath the LASUTH Bridge along the traffic light corridor inward Airport Road, Ikeja. The victim was involved in a collision with a DAF articulated truck while both were approaching the roundabout from the Maryland axis.
According to Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the cyclist was unable to maintain a safe clearance from the moving truck, resulting in fatal injuries at the scene. “Within moments, the situation escalated disastrously, and the cyclist was crushed,” Taofiq explained.
LASTMA officials responded immediately, and the truck driver, who reportedly attempted to flee, was apprehended and handed over to the Ikeja Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution. Officers from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit were invited to evacuate the remains and restore traffic flow.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon Sola Giwa, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the victim’s family. He urged cyclists and commercial motorcyclists to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and avoid highways and high-risk roads to prevent such accidents.
Hon Giwa highlighted the government’s ongoing public enlightenment campaigns aimed at educating vulnerable road users about safety, including avoiding expressways and confining movements to inner roads.
The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, reaffirmed its commitment to strict traffic law enforcement, continuous public sensitisation, and protection of all road users, appealing to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to act responsibly and prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies on state roads.
