Former Head of State, General Dr. Yakubu Gowon, has emphasized that Nigeria’s path to national renewal begins with moral revival grounded in the transformative power of the Holy Scriptures.

Delivering a goodwill message at the grand finale of the 60th Anniversary Celebration of The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) at MUSON Centre, Onikan Lagos, Gowon highlighted the critical role of the society in shaping the nation’s moral compass. The event attracted Nigeria’s political, religious, and business elite, including representation from former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan through Rtd Lt Col. Paul Edo Obi.

As Patron of the BSN, Gowon commended the society’s six-decade journey since its founding in 1966, noting its contributions to Bible translation into indigenous languages, scripture distribution in print and digital formats, and outreach to prisons, security agencies, and displaced communities. He described the Bible as “light in darkness, hope in despair, and truth in confusion,” stressing that in an era marked by moral decline, conflict, and misinformation, the relevance of the Scriptures has never been greater.

Gowon called on Nigerians, churches, corporate bodies, and international friends to support the BSN’s upcoming initiatives, including a sustainable infrastructure plan featuring the Bible House project. He stated, “When we support the Bible Society, we are investing not just in an institution, but in the spiritual and moral foundation of our nation.”

The event also featured a lecture by Pastor Poju Oyemade, Senior Pastor of The Covenant Nation, and honored individuals and institutions for exemplary service to God and humanity. Gowon’s message reinforced the idea that national development is inseparable from spiritual and moral transformation, and that supporting institutions like the BSN is central to nurturing the nation’s future.
