The United Nations has appealed for increased international assistance following severe flooding across multiple African countries that has displaced millions and destroyed infrastructure. Speaking on February 3 UN officials said the scale of the floods is overwhelming national response capacities.
Floodwaters have damaged homes farmland and transport networks while raising the risk of disease outbreaks. Humanitarian agencies warned that food insecurity could worsen in affected regions if aid is delayed.
The UN urged donor countries to provide urgent funding for shelter health services and clean water as climate driven extreme weather events become more frequent.
