Senate President Godswill Akpabio, speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit in Abuja on Thursday, May 22, 2025, firmly dismissed any possibility of impeaching President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the National Assembly’s support for his leadership. With two years remaining in Tinubu’s first term, Akpabio asserted that the Assembly would hold the President accountable if his performance faltered but currently sees no grounds for such action. “If this president has done well, is it not us (National Assembly) that will say so? If he has not done well, is it not us that will give him notice of impeachment?” Akpabio stated, adding optimistically, “We are not giving him notice of impeachment; we are giving him notice that it was difficult for you in 2023, but in 2027 I see everything turning around.”

Akpabio’s remarks underscored Tinubu’s achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda, predicting a smoother path to re-election in 2027 compared to the competitive 2023 polls. He highlighted growing support, noting an increase in states aligning with the APC, including defections from opposition parties. The summit, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, also saw the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, endorse Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for 2027. Uzodimma moved a motion, stating, “The governors produced by the APC are hereby charged to market all federal government policies and win all elections in their states come 2027,” urging the party to adopt Tinubu as its flagbearer.

The unified backing from the National Assembly and APC governors reflects a strategic push to consolidate power ahead of 2027, despite economic challenges like inflation sparked by Tinubu’s reforms. Akpabio’s confidence in Tinubu’s re-election bid, coupled with the PGF’s commitment to dominate political spaces, signals a robust campaign to maintain APC’s grip on Nigeria’s leadership, positioning Tinubu as the frontrunner amid a fragmented opposition.
