A political standoff is emerging in Kano State after Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo refused to resign following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While expectations within the APC were that Gwarzo would step down alongside other loyalists of NNPP leader Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the deputy governor has chosen to remain in office and continue his allegiance to the party. The NNPP’s Kano State chapter has publicly supported his decision, emphasizing his constitutional right to hold office and his pivotal role in state governance.

Spokesman Engr Ibrahim Karaye stated, “Gwarzo’s continuity in office is essential for the stability and progress of the state’s governance.” He further noted that the deputy governor was elected on a joint ticket with Governor Yusuf and is entitled to discharge his duties without partisan interference.

The Kano State Information and Internal Affairs Commissioner, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, urged Gwarzo to take “the honourable step” of resigning if he no longer aligns politically with the governor. Waiya argued that trust is central to effective governance, warning that political misalignment could compromise Executive Council functions.

Reports indicate that the APC-led state government, enjoying a two-thirds majority in the State House of Assembly, could attempt to impeach Gwarzo if he continues to resist resignation. However, securing a valid case for “gross misconduct” may present a significant legal challenge.

Meanwhile, Kwankwaso loyalists, including Gwarzo, maintain that adherence to constitutional responsibilities must take precedence over partisan pressures. The standoff underscores growing tension in Kano politics as the state navigates competing loyalties between party affiliation and governance continuity.
