BUA Cement Plc has announced plans to construct a 3-million-tonne-per-annum cement production line in Sokoto, in a $240 million project aimed at boosting the company’s production capacity and supporting infrastructure development across West Africa.
The new facility, to be developed in partnership with Chinese engineering firm CBMI, will increase BUA Cement’s total annual output to 20 million tonnes, reinforcing its leadership in Nigeria’s cement industry. The collaboration with CBMI builds on a 15-year partnership, during which the company executed projects adding 14 million tonnes of cement production capacity at BUA’s Obu and Sokoto plants.
Sokoto, the only cement plant in Nigeria’s North-West, offers BUA a strategic base to meet domestic demand and serve several landlocked neighbouring countries.
The project will integrate energy infrastructure, with a 700-tonne-per-day mini LNG plant under construction in Kogi expected to supply clean, reliable power to the new Sokoto line and existing operations. This co-location of energy and heavy manufacturing is part of a broader trend among Nigerian industrial firms to enhance operational efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
