The Yobe State House of Assembly has called on the executive arm of the government to prioritize the construction of more earth dams to harness the abundant rainwater for irrigation farming. This appeal was made through a motion of urgent public importance, moved by Hon. Bukar Mustapha, representing Bade West, and Hon. Sanda Kara Bade, representing Geidam Central, along with other members of the House.
The legislators emphasized the critical need for earth dams, noting that they would help farmers engage in irrigation farming and reduce the negative impacts of floods. Recent floods in the state have destroyed numerous farmlands and properties worth millions of naira, causing widespread hardship among farmers and communities.
By constructing these dams, the House members argued, the government could enable better water management, ensuring that excess rainwater is stored and used productively for farming during dry seasons. This initiative would not only mitigate the devastating effects of floods but also support agricultural productivity, improve food security, and boost the local economy.
The House’s call reflects the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by farmers in Yobe State, especially those whose livelihoods have been severely impacted by the floods. Constructing earth dams is seen as a practical solution that will help farmers recover and sustain their farming activities throughout the year.
