Residents of Dei-Dei in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, were thrown into shock after a 27-year-old woman, Esther Akwaji, reportedly collapsed and died under mysterious circumstances at her boyfriend’s residence.
Akwaji, a resident of Nasarawa State, had traveled to Abuja to visit family members. On January 21, she left her family home, telling relatives she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei, but she never returned. Hours later, a man claiming to be her boyfriend contacted the family using Esther’s mobile phone.
According to sources, the man said Esther had visited him, and while they were eating, she began vomiting. He claimed to have rushed her to Kubwa General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The alleged boyfriend reportedly fled the hospital shortly after her death and remains unreachable.
Confirming the incident, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that a full investigation has commenced. “The corpse has been deposited for autopsy to determine the actual cause of death, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect,” she said.
Adeh explained that the incident was reported on January 22 by Peter Akwaji, Esther’s brother, who received a distress call from an individual identifying himself as her boyfriend. Police operatives from Dei-Dei Division promptly recovered Esther’s body at Kubwa General Hospital and deposited it at the mortuary.
“Discreet investigations have commenced, and efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the alleged boyfriend, who is presently on the run,” SP Adeh added, assuring the public of the police’s commitment to a thorough investigation and bringing all culpable persons to justice.
