FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned the actions of some Senegal players and officials following “unacceptable scenes” during Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, where Senegal walked off the pitch in protest against a penalty awarded to Morocco.

In a statement sent to AFP, Infantino described the incident as unacceptable and against the spirit of the game, stressing that such actions have no place in football, especially at a major continental final watched by millions across the world.

“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members. It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner,” Infantino said.

The controversial incident occurred during the AFCON final when Morocco were awarded a penalty, a decision that sparked strong protests from Senegal players and officials. In response, the eventual champions walked off the pitch, leading to delays and tense moments before order was restored.

Infantino emphasized that football must always be played with respect for the rules, match officials, and the values of fair play, regardless of the emotions involved in high-stakes matches. He noted that while disagreements with refereeing decisions are part of the game, walking off the pitch undermines the integrity of competitions and sets a poor example for fans and young players.

The FIFA president also criticized the conduct of some supporters, warning that football authorities would not tolerate actions that bring the sport into disrepute. He reiterated FIFA’s commitment to working closely with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to ensure discipline, respect, and professionalism are upheld in African football competitions.

The AFCON final, which was expected to be a celebration of African football, instead drew global attention due to the dramatic protest. While Senegal eventually emerged champions, the controversy surrounding the penalty decision and walkout has overshadowed aspects of the victory.

As of now, CAF is yet to announce whether disciplinary measures will be taken against those involved in the incident.
