Fatima Atiku Abubakar, the first daughter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), adding fresh momentum to the growing opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fatima, a medical doctor and former Commissioner of Health in Adamawa State, was formally received into the party on Monday in Abuja. She completed her registration and collected her ADC membership card at her ward in the Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory, marking her official entry into the party’s political structure.

The event was attended by key ADC stakeholders, including the party’s FCT Chairman, Chief Clement Oba Ehigiator, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairman of the party, and other party leaders. Her reception was described as significant, given her political background and family influence within Nigeria’s opposition politics.

Speaking through her actions, Fatima’s move signals a strengthening of the ADC’s role as a rallying platform for opposition figures dissatisfied with the current political order. The party has increasingly positioned itself as a central hub for politicians and groups working to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the 2027 presidential election.

Fatima reportedly expressed enthusiasm about joining the ADC, noting her belief in the party’s vision and its capacity to provide a credible alternative for Nigerians. Her defection is seen as both symbolic and strategic, reinforcing the ADC’s image as a growing force capable of attracting high-profile figures beyond traditional party lines.

As realignments continue across Nigeria’s political landscape, Fatima Atiku Abubakar’s entry into the ADC underscores the intensifying efforts by opposition leaders to build a united front, potentially reshaping political dynamics in the lead-up to 2027.
