On January 3, 2026, a tragic boat capsize occurred on the Yobe River in Garbi town, Yobe State, Nigeria, resulting in at least 25 fatalities and 14 individuals missing from a total of 52 passengers. The boat, comprised of market-goers, farmers, and fishermen returning from Adiyani town in Jigawa State, overturned around 7:48 p.m. during their journey. Thirteen survivors have been rescued and are receiving medical care.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but past incidents in Nigeria have been attributed to overcrowding and the use of poorly maintained boats that often lack essential safety equipment like life jackets. Ongoing rescue efforts involve security agencies, emergency responders, and local volunteers, coordinated by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), which has dispatched teams from Bade and Nguru.

Governor Mai Mala Buni has expressed condolences to the families affected and has ensured immediate support for the victims receiving treatment. Boat accidents are a recurrent issue in Nigeria’s rural regions, where inadequate road infrastructure makes water transportation the only viable option. Overloading and poor maintenance of vessels are common issues contributing to these tragedies.

Authorities are advocating for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to mitigate the risk of such incidents in the future. As the search and rescue operations continue, there is a pressing call for enhanced public awareness and adherence to safety measures to prevent further loss of life in similar occurrences.
