In a major development in Turkey’s sports betting scandal, Istanbul prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for 46 individuals linked to the football industry, including players, referees, and club officials. By Friday morning, 35 individuals had been detained, featuring well-known figures like Mert Hakan Yandaş from Fenerbahçe and Metehan Baltacı of Galatasaray. Originally centered on over 150 referees, the investigation has broadened to include players, TV commentators, and administrators, with significant arrests such as the chairperson of Ankaraspor and former referee Ahmet Çakar.
The charges stem from a Turkish law designed to protect sports integrity by criminalizing match manipulation related to betting. Those accused could face imprisonment for up to three years or more, depending on their involvement.
