Youth and political advocacy groups from Nigeria’s North East and North West have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to keep Vice President Kashim Shettima in his current role, warning that any move to replace him especially with former Speaker Yakubu Dogara could stir unrest among party supporters before the 2027 elections.

This message was delivered during separate press briefings held in Gombe and Kaduna.

In Gombe, Honourable Umar Waziri Kumo, who heads both the APC Youth Mandate Forum and the North East Youth Forum, led the call. Meanwhile, in Kaduna, Comrade Haruna Mai Kano spoke on behalf of a coalition that included the North West Sociopolitical Group, Northern Rights Concerns Protection, and the Arewa Coalition for Good Governance.

The groups stressed that Shettima has strong grassroots support in the North East and warned that any attempt to sideline him could create tension within the party. They also advised that Dogara’s political weight be carefully considered, urging the President to make decisions that promote unity and strengthen the APC’s internal structure.

They called on political figures to steer clear of divisive rhetoric and instead work toward building peace and cooperation within the party.

The groups also paid tribute to the legacy of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that many in the region still hold him in high regard. They encouraged current leaders to uphold the values of unity and stability that Buhari represented.

Despite raising concerns, the groups made it clear they still support President Tinubu and trust his leadership. They believe that keeping the current team intact will help the administration stay focused on national progress and development.
