Peter Obi, who ran for president under the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has spoken out about the urgent need to improve security across Nigeria. His comments came after the convoy of former Anambra State governor, Chris Ngige, was attacked in Idemili North Local Government Area.
The incident happened on Thursday along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road and led to the death of a woman and injuries to a police officer. Obi reacted to the news in a post on his verified X account on Friday.
“Yesterday, while I was overseas, I received the deeply distressing news of the attack on the convoy of my elder brother, Sen. Chris Ngige. Upon my return today, I visited him in Alor to personally sympathize with him and to thank God for preserving his life.
“No Nigerian should live in fear, and no one should lose their life in such senseless circumstances.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the woman who lost her life. We must remain committed to building a Nigeria where the sanctity of human life is upheld and where every citizen can move freely and safely,” he wrote.
Obi said the attack is another example of the violence that continues to affect innocent people in Nigeria. He urged the government to work with citizens to create a better security system that can protect lives and prevent such tragedies from happening again.
