Obidient Movement Decries Edo Killings: A Call for Unity Against Violence

The Obidient Movement has issued a powerful condemnation of the horrific killing of Northern hunters in Edo State, urging Nigerians to reject the loss of humanity that such acts represent. In a statement signed by Nana Sani Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communications and Media, and Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator, the movement described the incident as a deliberate attempt to sow discord, intolerance, and division across Nigeria.

The tragedy unfolded when a group of hunters, traveling in a Dangote truck and carrying approximately 19 locally made firearms, were intercepted by vigilantes in Utomi, Edo State. According to a Friday statement from the Inspector-General of Police, the hunters were subsequently set ablaze by a mob, an act the Obidient Movement labeled as both disturbing and heartbreaking. The movement emphasized that these victims—potentially fathers, brothers, sons, and breadwinners—were returning home after months of labor, only to have their lives brutally extinguished, leaving behind grief and devastation.

While acknowledging the efforts of security forces, who have made arrests and are pursuing justice for the victims’ families, the movement posed critical questions: How long must Nigerians endure such violence? When will the nation choose to halt the bloodshed and begin healing? “An injury to one Nigerian should naturally be an injury to every Nigerian,” the statement asserted, calling for empathy and collective action to combat the rising tide of violence plaguing the country.

The Obidient Movement condemned the killings in the strongest terms, framing them as the work of a few undesirable elements intent on fracturing Nigeria’s social fabric. “We call on all Nigerians to unite against senseless and needless violence perpetrated by those bent on sowing the seeds of hate, intolerance, and division,” the statement read. It stressed the urgent need to build a society that cherishes human life and dignity, one that demonstrates to both itself and the world that such acts do not define the Nigerian spirit.

The movement’s plea is clear: Nigerians must reject these atrocities and work together to prove that a handful of perpetrators do not represent the nation’s values. As investigations continue, the Obidient Movement’s message resonates as a rallying cry for unity, justice, and a renewed commitment to humanity in the face of senseless brutality.
