PDP Urges Government to Move Beyond Politicizing Insecurity and Create a Solution

Comrade Ini Ememobong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), told the Federal Government to stop making security a political issue and to take clear, effective action.

Speaking during an interview, Ememobong cited National Bureau of Statistics figures and called banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism a “trillion‑naira economy.” He said issuing orders for kidnappers to free victims is not enough and that the country needs real solutions, not staged moves.

Ememobong warned about a troubling trend when officials meet armed groups. “It is a very dangerous signal when state actors like the police and government officials admit that they meet and discuss with armed bandits. There is no law that allows us to bear arms in this country,” he said.

He described the government’s responses as “reactionary and simplistic” and asked how state police would work in practice. He posed two questions directly: “What would the parameters be? How would they interface with the Federal Police?”

The PDP official also asked whether ransom payments are being made to secure releases. He accused the presidency of caring more about images than results. “We see pictures of the President sitting with Service Chiefs splashed across the media, even when the real work remains undone,” he argued.

On the plan to recruit more officers, he doubted the value of adding untrained personnel. “How will new recruits, who are not adequately trained, succeed in battles where well-trained officers are already struggling?” he asked, stressing that what is needed is the political will to let security forces act decisively.

Ememobong warned against creating the sense that non‑state groups have outmatched the government. “We must ensure that we do not, either consciously or unconsciously, give the impression that bandits and terrorists are stronger than the Federal Government,” he said.

Turning to politics, he said the PDP will protect opposition rights and that democracy works through fair competition. He said the party is rebuilding “along the lines of transparency, truth, and pan‑Nigerian values,” and he predicted troubles for parties formed by “strange bedfellows with conflicting interests.”
