Chelsea forward Estevao Willian impressed in the 3-0 Champions League win over Barcelona, and his agent has now outlined how Barca tried for the player before he joined Chelsea.
Andre Cury said talks with Barcelona stretched over several years. “We talked to Barça about Estevao in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. We went to the offices to offer the player because I believed that he would have a great future in world football. Barca is not financially healthy and of course it is not possible to carry out an operation. It’s sad, but football is like that,” he told Cadena SER.
He added that Barca’s scouts and coaches backed the move, but the club’s money problems stood in the way. ”The people in Barça’s technical staff always approved the signing of Estevao, but Deco was tied up because the club’s finances didn’t allow it.”
Cury also spoke about how Estevao might have fit into Barcelona’s plans alongside other young stars. ”Think about the duo Neymar and Messi, it’s better than just having Messi or just having Neymar,” he added.
The agent noted that Estevao has committed his future to Chelsea with a long deal and is settled at the club. “Estevao has a five-year contract and is enjoying his time at Chelsea. But he has a special affection for Barcelona.”
Cury made clear that Barcelona wanted the player but lacked the funds and even though Chelsea secured him on a long contract, the player still holds fond feelings for the Catalan club despite now thriving in England.
