Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has opened up about a recent episode involving ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, revealing that a $20,000 gift he offered was returned following a disagreement tied to his 65th birthday celebration.

In an interview, Fayose explained that the money was intended to support Obasanjo’s attendance at the event, which was part of a broader reconciliation effort with past political adversaries. He emphasized that the gesture was rooted in goodwill and respect, not political maneuvering.

“I wrote to him, and he returned the $20,000 I gave. I appreciate that,” Fayose said, confirming that the former president honored his request to return the funds.

Despite the financial resolution, Fayose expressed disappointment over Obasanjo’s conduct at the celebration, describing it as inappropriate and disrespectful. He said he was taken aback by the elder statesman’s public remarks, which he felt undermined the spirit of reconciliation.

The former governor used the incident to highlight the importance of discernment in political and personal dealings. He cautioned against misplacing trust and stressed that acts of kindness should not be misinterpreted or exploited.

Fayose concluded by saying the experience was a reminder of the delicate balance between generosity and self-respect, especially in the public eye. While he welcomed the return of the money, he noted that the episode underscored the need for integrity and mutual respect in political relationships.
