Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially received his membership card for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Atiku collected the card on Monday in his home state. The event took place at Jada Ward 1 in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. He posted photos of the moment on 𝕏 with the caption: “It’s official. -AA.”

This move follows his formal resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July 2025. Atiku had met ADC leaders in Adamawa on Sunday in Yola and spoke about the party as a new base for his supporters across the country.

He told party members: “In Nigeria as a whole, there is a new political movement, is it not so? Today, the new movement has taken us to where? To the ADC. So, the people of Adamawa and Nigeria, our new party is ADC and our new leaders in Adamawa are here seated.”

He asked the crowd if they would accept him into the party, and they answered loudly in the affirmative. He also said: “After that, on Monday, I will be officially in the ADC. Before now, I was not in; you were there before me. Will you accept me?” and later added, “May God allow us to witness Monday. It is tomorrow; we are hopeful to meet tomorrow.”

ADC Explains Atiku and Obi’s Absence at Secretariat Launch

There had been doubts about how fully Atiku and former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi would commit to the ADC after the opposition coalition chose the party in July as its platform for the 2027 election. Their absence from the opening of the ADC’s new national secretariat last week raised fresh questions.

Responding to those concerns, the ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi told Punch that Obi’s absence did not reflect any political rift and said the former presidential candidate remains part of the coalition.
