Google Releases “Private AI Compute” to Run Gemini Models Securely in the Cloud

Google has introduced “Private AI Compute,” a new cloud service that runs its Gemini models while keeping user data private. The company says the system is similar in aim to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.

The service lets devices send AI tasks that are too large for local chips to the cloud. Google says those tasks can be handled there without exposing personal data to Google or any third parties.

Google noted it has long worked on privacy tools for AI. With “Private AI Compute,” the company combines its strongest Gemini models in the cloud with privacy protections like those used on devices. The goal is to offer powerful AI features while keeping data safe.

The system uses custom Tensor Processing Units and Titanium Intelligence Enclaves (TIE). These hardware-secured units create an isolated “fortified space” where AI work is done without direct access to raw user data. Devices connect through remote attestation and encrypted channels so the data sent to the cloud stays protected from Google engineers and admins.

Google plans to first use “Private AI Compute” for new features on Pixel 10 phones. Examples include upgrades to “Magic Cue” and a Recorder app that can make summaries of transcriptions in more languages. These features rely on larger Gemini models in the cloud because they need more computing power than on-device NPUs can offer.
