Vodacom Group has agreed to work with Starlink to bring fast, low-latency satellite internet to businesses and to boost network reach in rural parts of Africa. The partnership aims to close gaps in connectivity and open up new chances for growth, learning and local projects.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Starlink, a move that accelerates our mission to connect every African to the Internet. Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology will help bridge the digital divide where traditional infrastructure is not feasible, and this partnership will unlock new possibilities for the unconnected,” said Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub.
Starlink, already active in 25 African countries, will work with Vodacom to add reliable, high-speed links for more users and communities, SpaceX’s Chad Gibbs said: “Starlink is already serving people, businesses and organisations in 25 African countries. By collaborating with Vodacom, Starlink can deliver reliable, high-speed connectivity to even more customers, transforming lives and communities across the continent.”
Under the deal, Starlink’s satellite backhaul will be added into Vodacom’s mobile network. This blend of satellite and ground systems should speed up coverage in remote places and improve service quality in rural areas. Schools, clinics and small towns could gain steady internet access for services like online learning and telehealth.
Vodacom will also be allowed to sell Starlink gear and services to businesses and small firms, while tailoring offers to local needs and budgets. The company says it built product ideas by talking to clients in mining, oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, retail and finance: “By listening to clients across a range of industries, including mining, oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, retail and financial services, we have created a suite of relevant products,” Joosub commented.
The combined product set uses both terrestrial and satellite links. Offerings include pay-as-you-use backup Internet, 100% unbreakable Internet, device-as-a-service, and branch network pooling. These options add to Vodacom’s current services, such as 4G, 5G, fibre and other satellite solutions.
Vodacom says the move supports its Vision 2030 goal to grow its customer base and expand financial services in the coming years. The company sees Starlink as a complementary layer that brings it closer to wider and more reliable coverage.
“By harnessing Starlink as a complementary layer, Vodacom is edging closer to universal coverage and reaffirming its commitment to connecting people to a better future.”
