Fresh details have emerged about the recent move to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio, revealing it wasn’t a well-planned coup but rather a scattered effort by frustrated senators from both the ruling APC and opposition parties.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who chairs the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, confirmed the attempted shake-up during a chat with reporters at the National Assembly in Abuja. The former Abia State governor said the effort failed thanks to senators who stepped in to defend the unity and credibility of the 10th Senate.

Kalu emphasized that the Senate remains focused on its core responsibilities, making laws and holding the government accountable, while also backing President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to tackle Nigeria’s economic problems.

“Though there were attempts, we didn’t allow that to happen. That is why I always say we are one big family, and it is not going to happen. The Senate is united behind its leadership,” Kalu said. “Whatever the problem is, the Senate is more interested in making laws that will help President Tinubu overcome the economic difficulties our people are going through. We are more interested in the people. The legislations we are making are pro-people, and we are focused on ensuring Nigerians can eat three times a day.”

Insiders say the unrest stemmed from lawmakers who felt left out of key committee roles and accused Akpabio of favoring a tight inner circle. Others were reportedly upset about being excluded from important conversations on national issues like the budget and security matters.

Despite the tension, the Senate appears to have closed ranks for now around its leadership, with Kalu and others calling for unity and a renewed focus on serving the Nigerian people.
