Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne has been suspended for one game without pay by the NFL due to unsportsmanlike conduct during a recent game against the Detroit Lions. The incident happened in the second quarter of the Commanders’ 44-22 loss when Payne was ejected for striking Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. This action violated league rules that prohibit unsportsmanlike behavior, such as throwing punches or striking an opponent’s head or neck.

The altercation occurred after Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs scored a touchdown, adding to Detroit’s lead. Following the score, Payne confronted St. Brown and punched him in the helmet. St. Brown noted that he and Payne had exchanged words before the incident, suggesting some level of provocation. Commanders linebacker Javon Kinlaw defended Payne, indicating that St. Brown may have instigated the conflict and acknowledged the physicality of football while urging his teammates to be smarter to protect the team.

At 28 years old, Payne has been a significant asset for the Commanders, having been drafted 13th overall in 2018. This season, he has tallied 30 tackles and one sack over ten games. As a result of the suspension, Payne will miss the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins in Madrid on November 16 but is expected to return to the active roster on November 17, if the suspension is upheld.

Currently, the Commanders sit at 3-7 and have suffered five straight losses, four of which were by over 21 points. The team faces mounting challenges as they prepare for their international matchup against the Dolphins.
