In a significant event, over 400 items from Jim Henson’s archives, encompassing puppets, props, costumes, and set pieces, will be auctioned this fall, marking the first public sale of such artifacts from his extensive career. Announced on what would have been Henson’s 89th birthday, this auction is part of The Jim Henson Company’s 70th anniversary celebrations.
Notable items up for bid include a full-body puppet of Naia Drenchen Gelfling from “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” valued between $15,000 and $25,000. Other highlights feature a full-body puppet of Uncle Traveling Matt from “Fraggle Rock,” a hero treasure map prop from “Muppet Treasure Island,” and puppets from “The Hoobs.” There’s also a collection of Squirrel hand and glove puppets from “Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas,” a goblin helmet from “Labyrinth,” and busts of literary figures from “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” Additionally, Baby Kermit’s rocking chair from “The Muppets Take Manhattan” and a Miss Piggy-signed 1981 Cover Girl calendar will be available.
The auction is being managed by Julien’s Auctions, with online bidding beginning on October 22 and the live auction taking place on November 25. A collector’s catalog showcasing all items will also be offered. Over the years, the Henson family has donated several iconic creations to the Smithsonian Institution, further solidifying Jim Henson’s legacy in American culture. This auction represents a rare opportunity for fans and collectors to own a piece of Henson’s remarkable artistic journey.
