Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has announced independent laboratory tests confirming that her husband’s death was due to poisoning. Navalny, a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, died at the age of 47 in a Russian Arctic penal colony in February 2024. Official accounts claimed he succumbed to an illness during a walk, citing various health issues and arrhythmia as factors.

In a video message on September 17, 2025, Navalnaya disclosed that biological samples from Navalny’s body were smuggled out of Russia and tested in two separate countries. Both laboratories reached independent conclusions of poisoning, prompting Navalnaya to criticize the labs for not releasing their findings due to political fears, while demanding transparency. She pointed out the discrepancies in the Russian government’s narrative and raised concerns about the lack of prison security footage.

EU leader calls for Europe’s ‘moment of independence’ amid war and global power tensions.

Navalny had previously survived a poisoning incident in 2020 involving the Novichok nerve agent, with Russian officials denying involvement in both cases. Navalnaya and international observers have challenged these denials, heightening global awareness and demands for accountability.

The Kremlin has dismissed Navalny’s death as unremarkable and labeled his supporters as extremists, maintaining a stance of non-involvement. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refrained from commenting on Navalnaya’s revelations.

These new findings amplify scrutiny on the Kremlin and reignite worries about political repression in Russia. Despite governmental harassment and surveillance, Navalnaya has committed to continue her husband’s fight for a “free Russia,” emphasizing her determination to pursue his legacy and mission against President Putin.
