Kamindu Mendis’ explosive batting propelled Sri Lanka to a thrilling four-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the first T20 International at Harare Sports Club. Chasing a target of 176, Sri Lanka successfully reached 177-6 with five balls to spare, largely due to Mendis’ remarkable unbeaten 41 runs off just 16 balls. Earlier, Zimbabwe, batting first, posted a competitive total of 175-7, thanks to opener Brian Bennett, who anchored the innings with a solid 81 runs off 57 balls, including 12 boundaries. Sikandar Raza contributed 28 runs, while Ryan Burl added 17 runs, but Zimbabwe’s innings faced a hiccup with late wickets. Sri Lanka’s bowling was spearheaded by Dushmantha Chameera, who took 3 wickets for 30 runs.

Sri Lanka’s chase started well, with Pathum Nissanka scoring a brisk 55, featuring four fours and two sixes, before falling victim to a middle-order collapse that saw the team slip to 106-4, raising concerns about their chances. At this critical juncture, Mendis emerged as the game-changer. His aggressive batting, highlighted by four sixes, revitalized the chase. He formed a crucial partnership with Dushan Hemantha, who was unbeaten on 14, ensuring they crossed the finish line with five balls to spare.

This victory gives Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20 series. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday at the same venue, where Zimbabwe will aim to level the series.
