Alphabet Inc.’s stock surged over 9% following a critical U.S. federal court ruling that allowed the company to avoid a potential breakup. This increase resulted in approximately $210 billion being added to its market value, driven by Judge Amit Mehta’s decision to let Google retain control over its Chrome browser and Android operating system. While the ruling included restrictions on exclusive contracts with device manufacturers and browser developers, it notably permitted Google to continue paying companies like Apple to feature its search engine, safeguarding a key revenue stream.

The court’s decision effectively mitigated a significant legal threat posed by the U.S. government’s 2020 antitrust lawsuit, which claimed Google maintained a search monopoly through exclusionary practices. Despite finding violations of antitrust laws, Judge Mehta chose not to impose a breakup, citing increased competition from AI platforms like ChatGPT. Instead, he mandated limited sharing of search data with competitors to aid in developing rival AI tools, although analysts believe this may have a minimal effect on market competition due to Google’s data dominance.

The favorable ruling positively impacted other tech stocks, with Apple’s shares rising by 3.7%, thanks to the ongoing partnership with Google. The decision is viewed as a pragmatic legal resolution that supports Alphabet’s partnerships and potential integration of its Gemini AI into Apple’s Siri.

Overall, the court’s ruling alleviated uncertainties in the market, enhancing Alphabet’s market position and enabling the company to pursue its strategic partnerships and AI initiatives without the threat of being broken up. As of the latest data, Alphabet’s stock price stands at $230.66 with a slight change since the previous close.
