At the 2025 Venice Film Festival, Jude Law showcased his performance as Russian President Vladimir Putin in “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” directed by Olivier Assayas. The film, based on Giuliano da Empoli’s bestselling novel, tells the story of Putin’s rise to power through the perspective of Vadim Baranov, a fictional Kremlin insider portrayed by Paul Dano. Set in post-Soviet Russia, it traces Baranov’s journey from artist to political strategist, highlighting the complexities of power and manipulation.

Law expressed confidence in his role, indicating he was not concerned about potential backlash for depicting Putin. He emphasized the film’s nuanced portrayal, focusing on the Russian leader’s internal struggles while avoiding overt provocation. Director Assayas remarked that the film mirrors a global trend towards authoritarianism, presenting a stark view of contemporary governance.

The film premiered to a ten-minute standing ovation, reflecting its impact and the audience’s admiration for the performances. Critics have praised Law’s ability to accurately capture Putin’s mannerisms and inner conflicts. However, some reviews expressed concern that the film may depict Putin too sympathetically, possibly downplaying the severity of his political actions.

Among 21 contenders for the prestigious Golden Lion, the film’s release is particularly timely, coinciding with ongoing global conversations about authoritarianism, further fueling interest and debate. Winners of the festival are set to be announced on September 6, 2025. Overall, “The Wizard of the Kremlin” stands out for its exploration of political themes and its significant cultural relevance in today’s sociopolitical landscape.
