South Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), found guilty of hate by the Cape Court. This stemmed from comments Malema made at an EFF rally in October 2022, where said, “You must never be scared to kill, a revolution demands that at some point there must be a killing.” The court concluded that his remarks intended to incite harm and hatred.

The ruling prompted varied in South Africa’s political sphere. The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomed the decision, viewing it as critical for the rule of and constitutional values. DA leader John Steenhuisen pointed out that such divisive language poses risks not only locally but also affects South Africa’s international reputation.

Previously, he faced legal for singing the “Shoot the Boer” song, which resulted in a conviction later overturned, and a 2023 decision by the Johannesburg High Court that reversed an exoneration by the South African Human Rights Commission regarding another alleged hate speech incident in 2016.
