Russia has resumed direct passenger flights between Moscow and Pyongyang, marking the first such service since the mid-1990s. The inaugural flight, operated by Nordwind Airlines, departed from Sheremetyevo International Airport on July 27, 2025, and was quickly sold out, with tickets priced from 44,700 roubles ($563). The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, with a capacity of 440 seats, completed the eight-hour journey to North Korea’s capital.

Initially, flights will operate once a month to build stable demand, with plans to increase frequency to twice weekly in the future. This development follows the resumption of Moscow-Pyongyang passenger rail service in June 2025, a 10-day journey that had been suspended since February 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zelensky Alerts of Urgent Crisis at Nuclear Facility Amid Power Failure

The revival of direct air and rail links between Russia and North Korea signifies a deepening of bilateral relations amid ongoing tensions over the war in Ukraine. Reports suggest that North Korea has provided military support to Russia, including sending troops and arms to assist in the conflict, claims both nations have denied. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently reiterated unconditional support for Russia’s stance in the conflict.

The resumption of these transportation services underscores the strengthening ties between the two nations, reflecting a mutual interest in enhancing economic and political cooperation. The direct flights and rail services are expected to facilitate increased tourism, trade, and diplomatic exchanges, further solidifying the partnership between Russia and North Korea.
