Italian striker Mateo Retegui has completed a high-profile move from Atalanta to Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah, signing a four-year contract. While the clubs did not disclose the financial details, reports from Italian media estimate the transfer fee at approximately €65 million ($76 million), making Retegui the most expensive Italian player in history.

Retegui joined Atalanta from Genoa in August 2024, stepping in to replace the injured Gianluca Scamacca. In his debut season, he made an immediate impact, scoring 25 goals in Serie A and finishing as the league’s top scorer. His prolific performance was instrumental in Atalanta securing a third-place finish in the league.

Internationally, Retegui has represented Italy since 2023, earning six goals in 20 appearances. Born in Argentina, he qualified to play for Italy through his grandparents and has been a regular feature in the national team since his debut.

Al-Qadsiah, newly promoted to the Saudi Pro League, has been active in the transfer market, aiming to strengthen their squad with high-profile signings. The club recently saw the departure of Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored 21 goals in 36 appearances during his single season at Al-Qadsiah. Retegui’s arrival is expected to bolster the team’s attacking options as they look to make an impact in the league.

The transfer underscores the growing financial influence of the Saudi Pro League, which has attracted several high-profile players in recent years. Retegui’s move is part of a broader trend of Italian players seeking opportunities in the Middle East, reflecting the region’s increasing prominence in the global football landscape.
Atalanta’s sale of Retegui represents a significant profit, considering they acquired him for €28 million from Genoa just a year ago.

The club is now expected to reinvest the funds into strengthening their squad ahead of the upcoming season, with potential targets including Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee, Feyenoord’s Santiago Giménez, and Girona’s Artem Dovbyk.
Retegui’s departure marks the end of a successful chapter at Atalanta, where he quickly became a key player. His move to Al-Qadsiah highlights the evolving dynamics of international football transfers and the appeal of the Saudi Pro League as a destination for top talent.
