The inscription was based on two UNESCO criteria: Criterion 4, which recognizes “an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates significant in human history,” and Criterion 6, which pertains to sites “directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary of outstanding universal significance.”

Port Royal’s rich history includes its rise as a major trading hub and its reputation as the “wickedest city on Earth.” In 1692, a catastrophic earthquake caused two-thirds of the city to sink into the sea.
