Ifeanyi Ejiofor (KSC), the legal representative for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has vehemently criticized a recent statement by Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, who suggested that the Nigerian government should arm Igbo youths to counter IPOB. Ejiofor described Gumi’s proposal as “malicious, misguided, divisive, and inflammatory” in a statement released to journalists in Abuja on Monday.
Ejiofor accused Gumi of having a “questionable obsession with monetary benefits,” linking this to the cleric’s role in exacerbating terrorism and banditry in Northern Nigeria. He argued that Gumi’s actions have significantly contributed to the region’s insecurity. Ejiofor pointed out Gumi’s notorious defense of those engaged in violent activities against Nigeria, suggesting that this has afforded Gumi a level of immunity which he finds troubling.
In his statement, Ejiofor elaborated, “Sheikh Gumi proposed that the government should arm Igbo youths to counter IPOB, a suggestion that is both divisive and inflammatory.” He further criticized Gumi for his complicity in Northern insecurity, noting that one of Gumi’s associates is currently under investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) for promoting banditry.
Ejiofor highlighted the hypocrisy and potential danger of Gumi’s advice, given his failure to address terrorism in his own region, saying, “Gumi’s inability to address the rampant terrorism and insecurity in his region makes his advice to arm youths in the South East, not only hypocritical but also dangerous.”
He also pointed out IPOB’s clear stance against criminal activities, mentioning their public disassociation from criminals and their readiness to collaborate with local security to tackle threats. Ejiofor suggested that Gumi’s proposal might serve a “hidden agenda” aimed at destabilizing Igbo land by inciting internal conflict, which could lead to “needless bloodshed and destruction.”
Ejiofor concluded by affirming the Igbo resolve to manage their destiny amidst what he described as political conspiracies against them, emphasizing a united front to combat external threats within Igbo land. This statement underscores the ongoing tensions between different ethnic and regional groups in Nigeria, highlighting the complex interplay of security, politics, and identity in the country’s discourse.
