The Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, has taken a significant step toward improving employment conditions by directly hiring over 360 cleaners from across the state’s three senatorial districts. This initiative was announced by Anthony Okungbowa, the State Head of Service, during a press briefing in Benin City.
The newly employed cleaners have been deployed to various government ministries and parastatals to enhance the cleanliness and operational efficiency of these public spaces. Okungbowa explained that this move was in response to Governor Okpebholo’s directive aimed at replacing the previous system where cleaning services were contracted out to consultants and contractors. Under the old system, cleaners were often paid inadequately, with salaries ranging from N20,000 to N30,000, which was insufficient for a decent living.
Governor Okpebholo’s dissatisfaction with the former system under the Obaseki administration led to this policy shift. The new approach ensures that these workers are directly employed by the state government, thereby guaranteeing them the N70,000 minimum wage, which is currently paid to all Edo State workers. This not only improves their financial situation but also provides job security, which was lacking under the consultancy model where workers could be dismissed without much notice.
Okungbowa highlighted the benefits of this new employment strategy, stating, “These cleaners, under the previous administration, were not government workers but employees of different contractors and consultants. Job security was not guaranteed, as workers under consultancy services could be sacked unceremoniously.” He further assured that the newly employed cleaners have received their appointment letters, and more hires are expected in the near future to meet the state’s cleaning needs fully.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Okpebholo administration to focus on people-centered governance, emphasizing direct employment to benefit local residents and enhance public service delivery. The move to provide better wages and job security for cleaners is seen as a step towards practical governance, aiming to uplift the living standards of Edo State’s workforce.
