Lagos is on the cusp of enhancing its rail transit system with the arrival of six new train sets, aimed at bolstering the capacity of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue and Red Lines. Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, shared via his X handle that these trains have passed their factory acceptance tests and are now ready for shipment from China.
Gawat elaborated that the new trains will significantly increase the number of trips available on the Blue Line, thereby improving service frequency and efficiency. These trains are expected to be fully integrated into operations once the second phase of the Blue Line, extending from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko over 14 kilometers, is completed by the first quarter of 2027.
“This development is not just about expanding our rail network; it’s about delivering direct value to commuters and enhancing the economic landscape of Lagos,” Gawat stated. He emphasized that these trains would alleviate commuter congestion and enhance the commuting experience for residents of Lagos, contributing to the state’s transportation and economic growth.
