In a significant administrative transition, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has appointed Mr. Benson Ojeikere as the new Head of Service (HoS) for the state. Ojeikere, who hails from Edo State, has a long history of service within Abia’s civil service, notably as a Permanent Secretary at the Government House. His appointment comes as Dr. Queen Obioma, the incumbent HoS, is scheduled to retire at the end of the year.

The announcement was formalized through a press statement released on Monday by Prof. Kenneth Kalu, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). The statement detailed that Ojeikere’s selection followed a “rigorous merit-based selection process,” underscoring the governor’s commitment to competence and integrity in public service appointments.

Governor Otti’s decision to appoint Ojeikere will take effect from December 31, 2024, coinciding with Dr. Obioma’s retirement. In his statement, Governor Otti also acknowledged Dr. Obioma’s service to the state, thanking her for her contributions as she steps into retirement.

This appointment marks a notable moment as it brings a leader from outside the state to one of the highest positions in its civil service, potentially setting a new precedent for inclusivity and meritocracy in Abia State’s governance.
