Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has underscored the pivotal role of Erling Haaland in his team, particularly during a challenging period for the reigning Premier League champions.
Haaland, who has scored 15 goals across all competitions this season, has experienced a dip in form recently. This has coincided with City’s poor run of results, including losses to Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton, Sporting Lisbon, and Bournemouth, leaving them eight points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of their Champions League clash with Feyenoord, Guardiola dismissed any notion of blaming Haaland for the team’s struggles.
“Erling consistently finds the target; at times, the goalkeeper makes the saves,” Guardiola explained. “The situation is not solely due to him. Without Erling, we would face even greater challenges.”
The City boss addressed broader issues affecting his squad, noting injuries and a lack of scoring contributions from other players. “We have several wingers, yet only one is currently available,” he said. “Phil [Foden] was highly productive last season but has had to deal with injuries this year. After Erling, our next top scorers are John [Stones], Josko [Gvardiol], and Kova [Mateo Kovačić], which is not typical for us. We need to find ways to create more goal-scoring opportunities.”
Despite the dip in form, Guardiola remains confident in Haaland’s ability to return to his prolific best. “We are fortunate to have Erling; he consistently gets three or four opportunities each game,” he noted. “It’s only a matter of time before he scores two or three goals, as he has done previously.”
Guardiola also emphasized that relying on a top scorer is not unique to Manchester City, pointing to other teams‘ dependence on their key players. “Name any team that wouldn’t depend on a top scorer like Erling,” he said. “Even the Norwegian national team looks to him for goals.”
As City aim to bounce back from their rough patch, Guardiola’s faith in Haaland and focus on resolving the team’s creative issues could be the key to reigniting their season. With a crucial Champions League match on the horizon, the manager will hope that both Haaland and the rest of the squad can deliver when it matters most.
