The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has addressed public concerns over the prolonged queues at the CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) conversion center on Airport Road in Abuja. This center, managed by NIPCO filling stations in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) and EPP Gas, has been the focal point of recent complaints about gas shortages and infrastructure challenges.

Speaking to the press, Ekpo acknowledged the situation and reassured the public of swift intervention. “I became aware of the long queue along Airport Road at NIPCO yesterday,” he stated, clarifying that although the project is a private venture with NNPCL, he had taken immediate steps by contacting EPP Gas to explain the shortage.

Ekpo emphasized that adequate gas supply exists domestically, suggesting that the issue might stem from infrastructure limitations rather than supply shortages. “We have to try as much as possible to improve infrastructure for gas delivery,” he said. “What we produce in our country is more than enough.” He further highlighted that NIPCO had initially committed to having 12 functional CNG stations, and after a meeting with NNPC and EPP Gas, he expected quick solutions.

The Minister’s remarks come amid the government’s ongoing push to expand CNG as a primary fuel source, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to promote cost-effective and environmentally friendly fuel alternatives. Ekpo noted the President’s recent formation of a CNG-focused committee aimed at accelerating the transition from traditional fuels to CNG nationwide. This move involves converting more filling stations across Nigeria to support CNG refueling.

Ekpo underscored the financial and environmental benefits of CNG, stating that it provides substantial savings for users compared to conventional fuels. “The switch to CNG is both economical and eco-friendly,” he said, reassuring Nigerians that CNG’s place in the country’s energy landscape is here to stay.

In response to the public’s concern, Ekpo committed to enhancing the country’s CNG infrastructure and informing the public about the ongoing efforts to expand CNG availability. His statement reflects the government’s determination to address logistical hurdles and ensure smoother access to this affordable fuel option.
