Kano State Government to Proceed with Local Government Elections Despite Court Order

The Kano State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to proceed with the scheduled local government elections on Saturday, October 26, 2024, despite a Federal High Court ruling that seeks to prevent the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from conducting the polls. This decision comes in response to a ruling on Tuesday by Justice Simon Amobeda, who disqualified the KANSIEC chairman and other commission members due to their political affiliations.

Despite the Federal Court’s order, the Kano State government remains determined to hold the elections as planned. This includes moving forward with the electoral process regardless of the availability of police or other security agencies to ensure protection during the event.

Lawan Hussaini Dala, Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, expressed criticism of the court’s decision, arguing that it directly contradicts a previous ruling by Justice Nura Ma’aji. According to Dala, Justice Ma’aji had earlier issued an order preventing 19 political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), from challenging the upcoming elections.

Dala stated, “The Federal Court’s decision to remove the head of the Independent Electoral Commission is in conflict with Justice Ma’aji’s ruling, which stops political parties from interfering with the elections.” He further emphasized that this conflicting legal stance has not deterred the state government’s commitment to proceed with the elections.

Adding weight to Kano’s decision is a Supreme Court ruling that mandates all states must hold their local government elections by the end of October. This directive reinforces Kano’s urgency to conduct the polls, ensuring compliance with the legal requirement for local government elections across the country.

The standoff between the Kano State government and the Federal High Court has raised questions about the balance between judicial orders and state autonomy in conducting local elections. However, the Kano State government has made it clear that it will move forward with its electoral plans, viewing the elections as a crucial element of governance that must not be delayed.

As election day approaches, the political climate in Kano remains tense, with potential legal and security challenges looming over the process. The state government’s insistence on holding the elections, despite judicial and security concerns, sets the stage for a high-stakes political showdown on October 26.
