Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of prioritizing politics over the well-being of Nigerians. Atiku’s response follows Wike’s remarks at an event in Port Harcourt, where he described Atiku as a “rejected politician.”
Wike’s comments appeared to reference Atiku’s statement after the recent local government election in Rivers State. Atiku had stated that the outcome demonstrated that the citizens of Rivers are firm in their opposition to political oppression and the influence of self-serving leaders.
Wike responded, saying, “If you claim that for an election we didn’t contest, it shows Nigerians have rejected us, that’s fine. But you, who contested and failed miserably, have clearly been rejected by Nigerians, so it’s time to pack up and go home.”
In his response, through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku dismissed Wike’s comments as baseless and fueled by personal grievances. “Wike’s remarks lack substance and show his focus is not on the people but on himself,” Atiku said.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate in the last election further stated, “This self-centered behavior is evident in his focus on local issues in Rivers rather than his responsibilities as a minister.”
Atiku emphasized his commitment to addressing the genuine issues facing Nigerians, contrasting this with Wike’s approach, which he described as self-interested. “While Wike indulges in baseless accusations, we remain dedicated to the welfare and progress of the Nigerian people.”
He accused Wike of creating false narratives and using live television coverage to criticize others. “We will not engage in the kind of behavior Wike is accustomed to. We prefer to maintain our dignity and focus on real issues, while others choose to engage in mudslinging,” Atiku added.
He concluded by describing Wike’s comments as another example of his “theatrical outbursts,” attributing them to the lingering bitterness Wike has felt since losing to Atiku in the PDP presidential primaries in 2022.
